Currently, the RDEK has two flood control service areas in the Fairmont area:
• Fairmont Creek Flood Control Service Area (34 properties)
• Cold Spring Creek Flood Control Service Area (113 properties)
Each Service Area has bank protection along the creek and Cold Spring Creek
has debris traps (holding ponds) that provide protection in debris flow and
flooding events. Maintenance, operation and repair of this infrastructure is
funded through property tax within the Service Areas.
These two Service Areas cover only a portion of the Fairmont community and we
are limited to providing service within these areas only. In the past two years, we
have seen the community-wide impact that debris flow events can have and are
now proposing to amalgamate and expand the current service areas and create
one large service area that covers all of Fairmont.
Read about the next steps in providing additional protection for the community (pdf) from debris flows or flooding.
There is a survey that will be open until April 17th and I hope, after reviewing the information package, you will consider filling out a survey as we would like to hear from as many people in the community as possible.
