Sale of Fireworks to be Regulated in RDEK

Starting next month, businesses in the rural areas of the RDEK will not be permitted to sell fireworks during certain times of the year. As of June 1, 2010, individuals and businesses within Electoral Areas A, B, C, E, F, and G will be prohibited from selling, gifting, or giving away fireworks when an open fire ban has been issued by the Province of British Columbia for anywhere within the geographical boundaries of the RDEK.

“We all know the devastating effect of forest fires and banning the sale of fireworks when an Open Fire Ban is in place is one more precautionary step we can take to help prevent these fires from happening,” says RDEK Board Chair, David Wilks. “At this time, the regulation applies only to the sale of fireworks in our rural areas; however, the Board will be looking into expanding the regulation in the future to include the setting off of fireworks.”
The Ministry of Forests and Range issues burning bans and the RDEK will be communicating with area businesses to help make them aware of the Ministry’s notification process.

“We will be contacting businesses that currently sell fireworks to notify them of the RDEK’s new regulation and will be providing them with information on how they can monitor and keep up to date on the status of open fire ban restrictions in our region,” says RDEK Community Services Manager, Shannon Moskal.

“We encourage all affected businesses to contact us if they do not receive information about the new regulation.”  The easiest way to find out what, if any, restrictions are in place is to visit the Ministry’s website at http://bcwildfire.ca/.
