Baltac Sewer System Now Complete

December 10, 2010 Invermere, British Columbia – A new sewer system in Baltac will result in improved water quality for Columbia Valley residents. The Regional District of East Kootenay completed the $2.6-million project with the support of $500,000 from the federal Gas Tax Fund.

“The Government of Canada is committed to supporting the health and prosperity of Canadians, said Jim Abbott MP for Kootenay-Columbia, on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “This new sewer system is just one example of the many ways we are delivering results for community residents.”

The new sewer system will service 190 residences in the community of Baltac.  The project replaced individual on-site systems with a community collection system that will provide treatment at a private off-site facility.  With the testing phase of the project successfully completed, the system is now ready to be connected to residences.

“The RDEK gratefully acknowledges the support this important project received through the Gas Tax Fund,” said Regional District of East Kootenay Board Chair, Scott Manjak. “The completion of the Sewer Project will most certainly have a positive environmental impact on the Lake and we are looking forward to getting all of the homes connected to the new system.”

“Opting to use gas tax funds towards more efficient and safer sewer systems is a choice that reflects the community’s green priorities,” said Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, Stephanie Cadieux. “This is a great example of sustainable infrastructure investments that will benefit the East Kootenay and the rest of the Province.”

The Gas Tax Fund is a tripartite agreement between Canada, British Columbia and UBCM delivering infrastructure funding to local governments primarily for capital projects that lead to cleaner air, cleaner water or reduced greenhouse gas emissions. UBCM administers the Gas Tax Fund in B.C. in collaboration with Canada and British Columbia.

“Many communities are facing cost pressures as they replace private septic and water systems with public systems,” said UBCM President Barbara Steele.  “Programs like the Gas Tax Fund are helping reduce the costs to local governments as we expand and upgrade community systems.”
